Paper, thoughts and gravity

Press release

FORMATOCOMODO presents Paper, thoughts and gravity, Joost Krijnen’s (Breda, 1983) first individual exhibition in Spain.

On this occasion, Joost Krijnen proposes a site specific project based on daily notes, pictures and sketches as his starting point. While working with different materials, he makes drawings in which the directess of the gesture and the usage of clean lines with a distracted appearence become the main elements.

A series of works that integrate materials such as wood, clay and paper is presented. For the first time they are used as a support for painting to define the concept of gravity. Behind each of them, there is an intention to evoke questions that arise from the representation of painting itself, its dimensionality and configuration in space.

In works like "United as a community we achieved our dreams" an energic attitude, quick and intuitive sketches show a strong narrative element. Meanwhile, "Acting natural" or "1,000,000,000 years" reveals different stages of Krijnen's work process, in which almost organically planes of colors are placed into perspective facing an apparent arbitrariness. Dissonant and harmonious, the exhibition unites works that come together in different layers that respond to each other.

After the residency at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam Joost Krijnen was awarded with two of the most prestigious prizes in the Netherlands, the Royal Award 2015 and the De Scheffer art award. His work is part of collections such asStedelijk Museum Schiedam, NL, Dordrecht museum, Dordrecht, NL, or ING collectie Nederland.
